Lockdown Project to Drift Machine: Ruan Oosthuizen’s Turbo BMW E46 Journey

At 32 years old, Ruan Oosthuizen is steadily making his mark in the drifting scene with his BMW E46 M52B28 Turbo, a car built with passion, persistence, and a love for motorsport.

Like many great builds, this one started during lockdown. What began as a project quickly evolved into something much bigger. Ruan started building the car while learning the fundamentals of drifting at the same time, developing both the machine and his skills behind the wheel.

Interestingly, his entry into drifting came through family inspiration. His father-in-law introduced him to the sport, opening the door to a motorsport that blends driving skill, car control, and visual excitement.

Drifting is unique compared to many other motorsports. While speed plays a role, the real focus is on style, precision, and maintaining control while sliding the car sideways through corners. It’s a discipline that requires confidence, mechanical understanding, and a lot of practice.

Although Ruan still considers himself a beginner in drifting, he has already begun competing in several popular South African drift events.

His main competition series includes Torque Titans at Rock Raceway, where drivers push their machines to the limit in front of enthusiastic crowds.

In addition to Torque Titans, Ruan also participates in:

  • Drift Palooza with Skellywags

  • Hyperdrift with Skellywags

  • The Drive Series in Durban

  • Potential East Coast Drift events

These competitions allow drivers to showcase their skills while also growing within the drifting community.

The BMW E46 platform has proven to be an excellent drift chassis, and Ruan’s M52B28 turbo setup provides the power needed to keep the rear wheels spinning and the smoke flowing.

To ensure the engine remains reliable under high RPM and boost conditions, the car is equipped with a BMW M52 Valve Spring Kit, helping maintain proper valve control during aggressive driving and high-rev drifting conditions.

Like most motorsport competitors, balancing multiple events throughout the year can be difficult. The cost of drifting — from tyres and fuel to maintenance and travel — makes it challenging to commit to every series.

Even so, the passion for drifting keeps Ruan motivated.

Looking ahead, there are exciting plans on the horizon, including the possibility of returning to Namibia later this year for another drift show, expanding his drifting experience beyond South Africa.

For Ruan, the journey is still just beginning. With every event, every build upgrade, and every lap sideways, he continues to improve both the car and his skills behind the wheel.

And one thing is certain — the turbo E46 will keep sliding.
